12/00: Top "Media one sided,
frequent, misinformation. There they go again. Calcium 'may' exceed recommended amounts,
which 'may' lead to kidney stones. 'Experts,' from Columbia Presbyterian and the NIH,
cautioned as to too much calcium 'maybe' related to intakes from well known cereals, white
bread, being enhanced with calcium as well as milk products. Now the opposing facts.
Roasted and toasted cereals, together with refined nutritional poor white floured
products,i.e bread, are foisted upon us as having been 'enriched' by FDA mandate with a
paucity of B vitamins and even with calcium to make up by supplementing a few of the
missing nutrients! The Ten State Nutrition Study, a federal funded program, reveals 4-5
missing essential nutrients in the American diet, which includes calcium. The 'experts,'
as interpeted by the media, suggest that 1000mg(1Gram) of calcium is ideal for
youngsters.Get this, our diets are calcium deficient and now to suggest 1 gram as
reasonable shoulders aside the facts, that rapid growth and development of children, which
undergo independent diverse chemical functions, thereby, have greater needs! Than there's
the suggestion that adults can be satified wth 1.5 grams of calcium. A fact, bones need
calcium at significant levels during early life to be strong, which depend on sustaining
life long intake levels. Finally, there's the question of vitamin D intake, which
determines calcium absorption and eventual bone deposits as well as effects on other
functions, i.e. clotting mechanism, muscle performance, etc. Insufficient vitamin D, or
worse no intake, leaves us, as victims, holding a bag of empty values. |
